The salary midpoint (from which the floor and ceiling are determined) is the players share (50% currently) of all Hockey Related Revenue from the previous season - divided by the number of teams of course. This is optionally inflated by up to 5% at the players discretion, with a certain percentage of their salaries…

The cap has been artificially increased in the past via increasing escrow (ie. the league sits on more of the players money until the end of the season, and then only pays out the portion that makes up the correct share of hockey related revenue).

This is the predictable result of counting on increased escrow (which the players hate but will opt for time and again when they know specifically which of their brethren will be out of a job if the cap fails to rise the next offseason) to bring up the cap in previous years, all because GMs can’t keep their houses in…
