It's not laying this on the shoulders of geeks or fat middle managers. We're laying this on the shoulders of a culture who tells the geeks and fat middle managers they can have Kaley Cuoco as a girlfriend if only they "hang in there" long enough or do all the right things. Read the article I liked to. I think you…
Oh jeeze. You are seriously missing the point. Really. Go read through the comments on this entire post and maybe you will learn something.
Geek/nerd culture is still very masculine, but more and more women are infiltrating. When I was your daughter's age, I wouldn't go to the comic book store without my boyfriend because the dudes in there made me so uncomfortable. It's getting better. Slowly but surely it's getting better.
I think there are millions of men like you. It's very important that you speak up and share your knowledge with men, particularly men who are still under the delusions that they are owed something by women. Thanks for your response.
I got the link yesterday from my husband. Yeah, he's a keeper. :)
Oh yes, silly me! It's the MEN who are victims here! I'm such a silly woman! /eyes rolling right with you
In Torrid's case, they used to use nonprofessional models in the early days of the store. I remember going to one of the first Torrid stores in Texas and there was a call for models for the catalog and mall fashion show. All they wanted was that you were actually plus size and over 5'6 (which I am not, sadly). As the…
Right? It was so excellent. I loved the part where he said "The fruits of our culture's ingrained misogyny laid bare for all to see."
"What is it about our society that has allowed these guys to go from those feelings of hurt/rejection to advocating rape? The mind fairly BOGGLES."
Yes, Old Navy is one of the only cheap options when your weight is changing. They used to have such great casual pieces that lasted through 20-30 pounds. Some of my favorite pants of my life I got at Old Navy when I was losing weight and wore them for years. They have, naturally, discontinued that style and fabric.
Erin, I don't know how you could sit there an not say anything. It would have been impossible for me not to start running my mouth. Which probably would have received terrifying responses. Anyway, you are vastly more emotionally mature than me.
There was an excellent article yesterday about this attitude: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/…
Old navy has turned into such crap. Not that it wasn't crap before, but at least you could find basic summer skirts, work pants, and t shirts there. Now they've limited the sizes in their brick and mortar stores, cut the quality (which was pretty bad to begin with) and cut everything like a big sack. I gave up on them…
I'm right there with you. I have to listen to inane chatter at work all day and doubt most of these people even know who Maya Angelou is. I just want to go home, go back to bed, and cry.
I put this article on my Facebook page this morning and it's already stirring controversy: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next…
I also went to a high school with very comprehensive sex ed. We did not have one single pregnancy in four years. They taught us about contraception, how to use it, and then scared the shit out of us with what basically amounted to, "If you have unprotected sex you WILL get pregnant, THEN an STD, you will never go to…
You may be a hard cheese snob, but let me tell you, if you add some Velveeta to mac and cheese made with hard cheese, it REALLY improves the meltyness and creaminess and you get the hard cheese flavor and don't really taste the Velveeta at all. Seriously, give it a try. Use about 1 part Velveeta to 3 parts real…
I think that if these kids are staying in school, both parents are staying involved in the babies' lives, and they are trying to built a solid future, this is good. More of that should be encouraged. I see teen parents every day who have dropped out of school in grade 10 or 11, have no GED, and live in abject poverty.…
I'm convinced she has a publicist who keeps her on the cover of these tabloids.
