What this back and forth makes clear is that when a University (or other institution, be it police, district attorney, etc) fails to provide a safe environment for its students (citizens), the students feel the need to protect themselves and their peers.

Having grown up in a very privileged area in Texas (so not quite the South, but close) in the '90s and having enlightened but not politically active parents, I can say that the story is not always so simple.

Yes! Thank you! I have a couple of handbags from their line (purchased sometime in the late aughts) and I love them. No logos or bling (shudder). Well made, simple and have stood the test of time. As much I never want to reflexively read something off someone's ass ever again, I am sad to see them go.
