I imagine he’d have been fine if any other film had won. The Green Book is utter shit

“I feel like 90% of the people whining about Green Book are white people who desperately don’t want to be labeled as “those” white people."

Actually, “Birdman,” “Spotlight” and “Moonlight” were admirable choices that hinted that maybe, finally, the Academy had turned a corner as wasn’t going to give Best Picture to “tailor-made for Oscar voters” movies. And then the next two winners... *sigh*.

It says something that it was made 5 years after Dr. Shirley’s death, especially when you learn that he was vehemently against the the movie being made, and told Villalongo as much when he was desperately trying to get it made back then.

I feel like 90% of the people whining about Green Book are white people

My recollection was that Crash winning resulting in criticism specifically related to its treatment of race. Also, all the other movies winning in the years that Malcolm X and Do The Right Thing came out.

“It is thoroughly serviceable and has a message that is at least attempting to be positive.”

it is thoroughly serviceable and has a message that is at least attempting to be positive.

It’s another movie where a white lead grapples with racism, made by mostly white people. That’s debate-worthy in a vacuum, but it really tends to bug black creative types when this kind of movie represents the vast majority of Oscar winners that deal with race at all.

I have a hard time seeing how that’s unreasonable.

Eh that’s probably the least inaccurate thing in the movie. People aged really badly back then. I was just watching an episode of Star Trek the other day and this was a man described as “in his early 40s” played by an actor in early 40s. Heck I’m 46 and this is what my dad looks like right now.

“Jesus Christ people, you talk about Green Book like it’s 90 minutes of white guys burning crosses.”

Wow. The award for “doesn’t comprehend the backlash, like, even a little bit” goes to...

I feel like deciding that 90% of the people who disagree with you actually hold ulterior political motives that they aren’t voicing, but are instead using their opinion of a movie to signal to others their personal belief systems, is ex-fucking-actly what you spent the rest of your comment decrying

We can all agree that Bohemian Rhapsody was a dumpster fire dressed as a high-class prostitute though.

uncomfortable scenes? Thank you for sparing me ... must be so awful. Can’t imagine those scenes beating out SS Nazi Goeth sport shooting women & children in Schindlers List or that real bloody horsehead in Woltz’s bed scene from Godfather but guess I’ll take your word.

At its worst, I felt Birdman was forgettable. Crash and Green Book are two pretentious white savior movies which make them worse.

Anything except Bohemian Rhapsody should have won over green book... and I say that as someone who doesn’t think bio pics of famous people should really be eligible for best picture, but at least Vice required some level of acting choice on parsing how Cheney really felt.

Or people with good taste.

Yeah I don't believe he's upset by his loss especially considering his seemingly very sincere surprise to win anything at all. Just that a stupid and controversial white savior movie beat everything else.

I don’t know that Spike Lee was upset that he didn’t win so much as upset that Green Book won. Like if he had lost, but Roma had won, I don’t know his reaction would have been the same. He wasn’t visibly upset when Cuaron beat him for Director.
