I think that’s too pessimistic. You are calculating the odds of a particular person getting the As or the Ks, not the odds of “somebody” getting them. Think of it this way ... your odds of drawing an A from the deck at random is 4/52. But if 49 people each draw in sequence, the odds of somebody getting an A is 100%.

Right. According to 538, Belgium earned themselves the third-easiest round of 16 matchup by winning. Gets harder for them after that, but the path to winning the whole thing is about the same for both.

I went to the fivethirtyeight interactive bracket you highlighted in the piece, and experimented with switching the England and Belgium positions. For either team, if you put them on the LEFT (supposedly stacked) side, they are predicted to have a 9% chance of winning it all. And if you put them on the RIGHT, it’s 8%.
