“I watched a few of the Tropes v. Women in Video Games videos and it was very mild and friendly. The way people responded, you’d think she was a politician passing a law to ban breast jiggle physics and anime body pillows.”

The backlash wasn’t really because of what she was saying; it was because she was saying anything at all.

She’s helped inspire a lot of good changes in the industry and in gamer culture. Thanks for all your hard work, Anita.

She opened every Tropes vs. Women video with the same line:

The ideas where *so incredibly* basic, 100 course level, surface-skimming concepts that the fact The Gamers(tm) reacted the way they did still dumbfounds me when I think about it. I cannot think of a single thought experiment more harmless than any concept she discussed.

It really says a lot about the world we’re living in that a woman doing a basic, surface-level feminist reading of video games became such a lightning rod. I haven’t engaged with everything she’s done, but I watched a few of the Tropes v. Women in Video Games videos and it was very mild and friendly. The way people

There is no law but Poe’s Law

Honestly, I was kinda over Lizzo being everywhere and everything to everyone... but I am totally in on this. I need to hear more of her LOTR on the recorder.

Yeah, to be honest. That.

This is one of those storylines I just look at and go... jeez, that doesn’t seem very enjoyable for anyone.

I think Xavier having his beliefs properly challenged is good, but I think there’s a million more interesting ways to do that than ‘hoho what if he killed everyone’

Marvel’s obsession with committing genocide over and over again is more than a bit unsettling at this point. With how often its come up its seeming like the message that Marvel is trying to send is less ‘genocide bad’ more ‘minorities aren’t allowed nice things and if you start to get happy we’ll kill you all off’.

I genuinely don’t get it.

so you’re a time traveler?

Just listened to the Camp Damascus audiobook this weekend on a road-trip with my girlfriend (she’s a librarian). It’s all more genuinely scary, more laugh-out-loud funny, and more seriously moving than I would have guessed possible. And it would make one hell of a movie.

I hope this wins a Hugo so that he can have Hugo-winner Chuck Tingle on every book cover.

These are right-wing culture warrior groups who have a permanent chip on their shoulder over the perceived favoritism shown to Muslims. It’s really not worth taking them seriously. Western libs don’t know enough about Indian politics to understand these groups’ political associations and agendas.

One way out!

This is absolutely false and should be deleted by the moderators. Excess deaths is the only meaningful metric given the incomplete availability of tests and understanding of the sequelae of infection, and it’s not even in debate among serious mortality experts — COVID-19 caused more deaths than the official counts

I enjoyed the episode and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

KOTOR is one of my top 5 games of all time.  I’d love to shake Casey’s hand one of these days.

I think Muir is a very good writer with big ideas that she conveys well. I just don’t like waiting through most of the book for the main character to catch up to me.
