it’s not for people who are following too close, it’s to get ready for that person to jump out in front of you. they always say the same thing “i never saw you”. I’ve learned from my roughly 10 years or riding that you should always assume that cars will not do what you expect them to do and you MUST ALWAYS be ready

New students are told to not cover the front brake and clutch, because when something goes wrong, the first thing they do is grab the front brake, the next thing that happens is the fall down, sometimes very hard. 

It’s easy to say “avoid getting in that situation whenever possible in the first place” but real life is probably a bit more complicated.
