I was originally looking at the Fusion to replace my then current car. By the I priced out the models available with what I wanted(sunroof, etc) I was pretty much (about $2,000-$3,000 difference) at the price of a Taurus with less trunk space and interior volume. That is essentially what steered me to Taurus.
They were called Yehudi Lights, they never made it into operational use however.
2016 Taurus owner here. I am still happy with my purchase. the trunk is big enough I can squeeze a large amount of cargo in there and still have room.
That maybe the one saving the Taurus, while Cops are moving towards SUV there maybe still enough of sale market to keep it alive. Also the fact that is built in the US, is another point in its favor.
