Likely several things here but with things getting hot and not working and then working again points to a thermal problem. I remember 80's and 90's GM ignition control modules that would get hot, shut down and kill the spark. By the time AAA arrived, it had cooled down enough to start working again.

Possibly the same reason the engines on the A-10 are mounted outside the body: if they go, they don’t take the rest of the car with it. Or in this case, exploding externally, while still catastrophic, is less likely to rip the entire car apart from the inside out, giving the driver a chance to survive the initial…

Based on the videos, it appears it was just off the transporter, and still in transport mode. It does not appear it was put in there by the new owner, but rather it had not been taken out of the mode yet post-shipping. Also, Transport Mode has no effect on airbag installation.

Maybe he put it in transport mode when the airbag fell out and he decided not to drive it to the service department.
