Look into Betterment. I've had an account with them for a little over a year now as a college fund for my god daughter. I decided to keep it separate from my Vanguard-based general investment stuff because I'll eventually be passing ownership over to her.
So yes, I did start small doing $50-100 a month into my "Retirement Test" sub-account, and then putting that in Vanguard once I had enough to start a Roth IRA with them. (I just looked, and minimum initial deposit with Vanguard is $3k, other companies such as Fidelity are less.)
