I missed the faint “Laura?” at the end of Part 18 when I first saw it. Now that I know it was there, and not only that, it was a clip of Sarah Palmer from the Pilot, it kind of threw my entire interpretation and theory into whack.

I agree. I interpreted the sequence as the atom bomb, being such a powerful force of destruction and “the evil that men do,” was the catalyst that opened the doors between realms, allowing the evil spirits of the Black Lodge to enter “our” realm.

This may be the most thoughtful and well-written piece I’ve read since the series ended.
