For car travelers: Make the trip in the middle of the night, no joke. If you leave at off-hours (we drove from 11:30pm to about 5.:30 am) and made it from NYC to Richmond, VA (yea, I-95), in 6 hours with several rest stops and no stress. There was 4 of us traveling together so we saved a bunch of money by not flying.
