There is a great book with a buried subplot about how the bystander effect defines our relationship with events.
Yeah, there was a study awhile back that showed the larger the group, the less likely someone would help. This poor woman, because she was out of it, couldn’t do what they suggest, which is make eye contact with ONE person and ask them to help. For some reason this kicks most people into gear to do the right thing.
It's the bystander affect. Truly horrible in this situation but very real. People assume that someone else will call the police, and someone else will provide physical assistance so they do nothing. Add in the drunkenness and the whole well she didn't say no and scream attitude and you get this shit show. But idk that…
