When I was young, it was because I was aspirational, and wanted to know the people who had helped to produce the media that I had so enjoyed. Odd that you mention documentaries in particular, and focus on Nova and Cosmos in particular. Those shows tend to be broadcast by PBS, and are usually available up on Netflix shortly thereafter.
