I agree the 12 hour clock is dumb and should go away (I probably should have made that clear in my question). But it’s not going away - which you seem to also agree on. So as an American I’m not getting away from it - so I speculated on one of the reasons it’s dumb, and the AM/PM thing is what I came up with.

So why does it exist?

AM and PM do not exist on the 24 hour clock. This is not about the 24 hour clock.

Letter writer here. Thank you - That was basically my (correctly-assessed) half of a point. Maybe I should have phrased my question as... “If we were deciding to to the AM/PM thing today - would we still have done it the way it is?”

Letter writer here. Way to miss the point of the comment. I’m not unaware or unaware of 24 hour time. That would also be simpler, and I have no problem using the system we currently use. I have no idea who actually came up with AM/PM - but they did it wrong.
