Amid all the chaos are small, still pools of order. They are increasingly hard to find and they must be acknowledged and shared. This is one such pool.

Even attempting to calculate my “annual base-level spending (rent, food, utilities, transportation, etc.) ... in each city you have lived” is futile. After 40 years of working, using this method to help me understand my financial position isn’t realistic. No system of calculating savings is perfect, but it should be

For a while, I  was making gravlax, due to its unparalleled awesomeness. I used a brick from my yard to weigh it down during the curing process.

HBO (Just HBO) $14.99/mo is listed in the Roku channel store, users may need to install it to replace the “Max” app. This rebranding thing has been a dumpster fire from the get-go.

Payday was the first candy that nailed the sweet/salty combo. A truly inspired combination. I remember trying to eat an entire bar without dropping one peanut.

A perfect slice of pie. Once a week, I go to Nation’s for a slice (which is 1/4 of a pie) of their no-sugar added apple pie. Take it home, cut it into 2 servings. Top one serving with plain Greek yogurt mixed with maple syrup. Eat very slowly, savoring the perfect crust, tender apples, the spice blend (definitely

Growing up in Southern California, summer was 3 months of hot. No air conditioning. We used to eat in the backyard all the time. Dad made a pass-through window over the kitchen sink to a converted baby dressing table next to the gas grill. It held all the grilling stuff. We sat at the picnic table on the deck under a

Cooking for one, with a small fridge. Shop once a week or so, whenever I run out of things.

Make a batch of soup (1 qt) served cold: Carrot ginger, Zucchini/Basil Avocado, Gazpacho, Vegetable. Have with lunch or dinner.

Thanks for posting this, it lead me on a wonderful search for information and recipes about something I have never given a second thought. A form of grass most of us would walk right past and not even know what it is.

Have you tried the ammonia option? Lifehacker had an article back in 2014. I’ve not tried it, but it might be a nice one to try.

Am I the only person using a system wide ad blocker on my devices? Blockada works great on Android.

Who would have imagined that a once a week, 4 minute video would have made this so much more bearable? It was an inspired idea and I am forever grateful. (Or that Stephanie’s greatest casting find was looking back in the mirror every morning.)

I made half a batch yesterday and it’s remarkable. Smoked paprika and sumac replaced the Aleppo pepper. Mine came out very thick (like stand a spoon up thick). I had to add a 1/2 cup of water, which did not dilute the flavor one bit.

Hell yeah. I missed that one.

You can use it in sauces, salad dressing, pour over cut-up summer fruit (let sit for a bit), marinades for pretty much any protein. It’s really nice over vanilla ice cream. It works like balsamic vinegar but without the bite. Lovely stuff.

I watched the owner of a little cafe in Athens make the salad for our dinner. He did it exactly as you did, save for one little difference. See if you can guess what it is.

One of my favorite hot weather meals is Gazpacho. No cook, all veg, delicious. Add a handful of little salad shrimp or some canned beans for more protein. Hard boiled egg, slices of salami and some bread or crackers.

I call bullshit on unsubstantiated lists. Who is the “we” that did the roundup and whom did they ask? California is ranked as the most culturally diverse state by the World Population Review, has 840 miles of coastline, we grow damn near everything that you can imagine and our iconic food is the avocado? Please. I’m

Peanut butter+hoisin+water to thin, microwaved=peanut sauce for stir fry, dip for apples, eat it with a spoon.
