I think part of the issue is that on these over-the-middle plays the big hit from the defender - which tends to be a spearing shoulder check - are now expected and anticipated. These are the plays that fire up the defense and the home crowd.

I believe that’s how the spirit of the rule is meant, but you see handballs called all the time when kicks are blasted into defenders. It’s a fickle thing. This one should’ve been called, IMO.

Well, I think Sherman’s thoughts are probably mostly in the context of people with the mindset that the players make “a lot” of money, so they should just shut up and be thankful for whatever the owners want to give them.
