I would love to put them all to bed at the same time, but how do you answer the older ones’ (reasonable) complaints about having to go to bed much earlier than other kids their age? Reading in their rooms is okay for any of them so that’s not much of an answer.

What about while breastfeeding? Google is seriously conflicted about that.

I think a lot of parents say “okay?” because it feels rude to order someone around, even pint-sized someones. I like to add “please” and “thank you” instead so it is less wishywashy but still polite.

There’s a huge difference between being self-deprecating and being appreciative though. I think “thank you” is a perfect response to any compliment, whether or not you agree with it. That’s very different from saying “oh no, I’m horrible” at something you’re clearly quite good at. I don’t deny having a western…

I did my study abroad in Tokyo—the one “rule” I hated was to say self-deprecating things I’d someone compliments you. For example:
