I think it was more for the name power, which is as important as acting ability and experience in acting. I’ve seen both The Princess Bride and Forrest Gump, but I’d still recognize Kevin Spacey over Robin Wright any day.

The woman was in intense daily misery, and had told her husband multiple times she wanted to die. She may not have put that burden onto the husband, but I can understand him killing her to spare her the pain, then just justifying it to himself with a “logical” reason like finances.

I am not sure how woman discriminating on the basis of sex differs in any way legally from a man discriminating on the basis of race. Both are illegal, and I’d argue equally immoral due to discriminating on the basis of somebody’s birth.
