I feel like the situation with Aziz Ansari is way overblown. Guys like Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein and Louis C.K. engaged in actual sexual misconduct. Aziz Ansari’s situation just sounds like a really awkward date.

I just find it fucked up that in Japan, child porn gets a slap on the wrist, while being caught with marijuana can destroy your entire career. Those are some skewed fucking priorities.

On the one hand, this sounds promising. On the other hand, it annoys me how people thing adult animation can only be comedies, and that this apparently goes for Marvel adult animation too.

Even more insulting is that not only did they don blackface/brownface/yellowface to make fun of minorities, they wore that stuff for serious dramas too, fully expecting to be taken seriously as actors, and denied people of color the opportunity to even play themselves a lot of the time.

What is it with old white men and referring to all ethnicities with a “the”? “The Whites, the Blacks, the Hispanics, the Asians”. No one else does that.

In large part it’s because there’s a lot of good anime that fill a niche that isn’t usually found in North America; animation that touches on more mature themes and aims towards an older demographic than the usual kids aged 12 and under.

As much as I love anime (sometimes), some of the more negative aspects of Japanese society still shine through even in that stuff sometimes. Like their sexualization of underage girls, rigid gender roles, xenophobia, racial stereotyping, grueling, soul-crushing work environments, conformity. Even their denial of WWII…
