In large part it’s because there’s a lot of good anime that fill a niche that isn’t usually found in North America; animation that touches on more mature themes and aims towards an older demographic than the usual kids aged 12 and under.

As much as I love anime (sometimes), some of the more negative aspects of Japanese society still shine through even in that stuff sometimes. Like their sexualization of underage girls, rigid gender roles, xenophobia, racial stereotyping, grueling, soul-crushing work environments, conformity. Even their denial of WWII…

Mr. Terrific’s good, but he doesn’t have quite the same icon status befitting a founding member (I sounded like an ultra nerd just now). I think Black Lightning is more iconic, in the sense that he’s one of those characters everybody knows about but no one (including myself) has ever read. Kinda like Hawkman.
