Well, I was a lifeguard, so yeah I’d tend to agree with you haha. But since I worked for a pool that was only open Memorial Day - Labor Day, everyone employed there qualified as a seasonal worker, and in Ohio that meant they could pay you pretty much whatever they wanted. I made $6/hr my first summer, and $6.25/hr the

It’s funny you mention that—at our public school, they did a once-per-year intervention with all seniors where they instructed everyone on how to fill out their voter registration, and then collected those of the students who’d be 18 by Election Day and submitted them to the state for us if those students weren’t

Yeah, the parental consent part is what’s relevant for this discussion, given that we’re not introducing an amendment where 16 year olds can only vote if they have parental consent. No one’s going to back an amendment that effectively doubles (or triples, etc. depending on how many children you have between 16-18 in

Yeah, I didn’t realize that there /was/ an income amount above which children are taxed--no one I knew ever made more than that amount before 18. We all worked seasonal jobs, which in our state meant we were legally paid well under minimum wage.

Sorry—you’re right and I was more talking about those who work and make less than that amount, as I did. IIRC all working minors do need parental approval forms submitted as well, but that may vary by state.

I remember having the taxes taken out of my paychecks, but I also remember getting refunded that exact amount. I was making far less than minimum wage as a seasonal worker though, so maybe that was why.

Agreed. I think in a lot of ways part of the issue is that you simply don’t have quite the frame of mind to truly put into context the majority of what goes on in politics at that age—at 16, you’ve really only been aware of/been able to mentally track the cause-and-effect aspect of politics for a handful of years, and

I think that’s part of the problem—16 is old enough to ‘work’ part time/summer jobs, but from what I remember of my jobs at that time, you end up getting your taxes refunded as you’re not yet an adult. You certainly don’t have to pay any taxes on any capital gains income.

But the military can’t recruit anyone under 18--and I’d not want them to lower recruiting age to match a lowered voting age.

I’d have likely voted Democrat at 16, but I also would have turned 16 a month before a mid-term election, and very probably wouldn’t have bothered to vote at all. My recollection of that election was just that I was very upset that Kasich was voted in as governor--which mattered to me mostly because of his education

Yes, I think that’s quite a fair way to do that. And I don’t believe in changing the taxable age to 16/changing child labor laws, so.

*Heaves enormous sigh of relief that our one Democrat Senator isn’t running for President in 2020*

Yep; and the other case was in the US in what, 2007?

Yes, I read the articles about it yesterday; very cool stuff, even if a true cure is years off. At least now they have a real place to start working from.

Oh, so Trump is taking credit for curing HIV now?

I would take so many naps. I would switch my sleep schedule so I only slept while at work, and then could maximize my free time everywhere else.

You, your family, and your mom all sound especially great. On behalf of younger sibs everywhere, thanks for doing your part! I fully support child-you telling other kids to fuck off, especially given that the most emphatic use of that phrase is always when you’re defending your family.

Older sisters: they’re okay sometimes!

“Jackie and Wilson” was my favorite song off the first album for about three years lol. It’s an excellent one. Out of the songs that weren’t released as singles for this album, I’ve really been loving “No Plan” and “Talk” the most so far.
