I have to disagree with your generalization. LED is a perfect solution for general lighting in the right circumstances and I have watched prices drop dramatically in the last couple of years.

LEDs are an electronic device and just like most electronic devices are sensitive to environmental extremes (temp, humidity, current), but it really varies by device design and diode type.

Or...you know...you could just use a pair of Kleins...and actually pay attention to gauge guides...
