nah evans is in freefall. he gets steady work but he hasn’t even starred in a theatrically released movie since 2019*. he can only do shit like ‘pain hustlers’ for so long before people realize noone is watching.

for sure. i think trying to watch it with a little distance and a ‘well, i wonder how much of this is written/planned’ is the only way to parse it, otherwise i would similarly be like ‘jesus is this guy just a tornado ruining lives for content?’

well i don’t think it’s fake-fake like the ‘jerrod carmichael character’ isn’t a reflection of him and what he’s actually going through and demons he’s battling. it’s just that the events depicted aren’t as real as they seem and the show is as much a commentary on the fakeness of reality tv as anything else.

i mean pearl was essentially a make-work project during covid, i imagine he always intended to go bigger with this one.

at the same time there are a million therapists who just get up and do that shit for free on tiktok every day, world gone mad!

aside from the filmmaking, it’s also funny seeing how larry changes with the times. 10 years ago he was doing ‘do not use your blackberry at dinner!’ bits, this year he’s doing ‘i need to charge my phone so i can also look at it at dinner like everyone else’ bits.

it’s not about selling the product it’s just finding a metric they can call a win. in the case of accidentally clicking a pop up and going to the site, that’s a +1 to clickthrough.
