Nowhere is Subaru’s might stronger than here in New England. Having the most AWD vehicles in the lineup helps, I’m sure. All I know is that Subarus are the dominant force in my office parking lot, well ahead of Toyotas, Fords, even Volkswagens (another regional thing I’ve noticed. People love their VWs up here).

2 questions:

If by “slap on a few goodies” you mean replace the heads, induction system, exhaust and internals...and change the block...then, sure.

My guess is that it’s simply a placeholder to protect their FR-S trademark from copycats/IP dilution.

Seems like a no-brainer/easy homerun, but these are auto manufacturers so of course they'll do it the hard way.
