My first thought, but according to the chart posted by Burner-365, the plane was at an altitude too high for birds. Plus these engines are designed to ingest bird without losing containment of fan parts.
Freaking amazing. It’s awful if someone died in this incident, but the better question to ask is why isn’t everyone dead? It’s because commercial aviation is subject to fairly rigorous government oversight and a culture of actually solving problems, as opposed to, say, the petroleum & mineral extraction industries.
