You know, I'm just tired of this. I'm tired of being told I can't protect myself from an unwanted pregnancy. I'm tired of being told I can't have sex that doesn't result in a baby. I'm tired of being told that when I'm pregnant I'm a liability. I'm tired of being told that when I'm having a baby, I won't necessarily

Oh fine! Now they get picky about who to give home loans to...

There's a multitude of factors involved, including the fact that rape prevention education in the US still largely consists of teaching women how not to be raped instead of educating men about bodily autonomy and consent.

I cracked up because I showed this article to my bf and he said "Wait why the hell is this Kirby fellow involved?"

"This kind of shit article is actually what ruins womens (sic) sports.". Guess we missed the "hyperbole" part. Oh, and "the male position is not the neutral position" part. Oh, and the "shred of sense" part (that one's mine).

That's the point, though, isn't it? By not giving a qualifier on "top scorer," you are automatically including women AND men. By giving the qualifier, men's, you are simply acknowledging that they are two completely different tournaments. Unless I'm way off base, I didn't interpret the author's desire to co-mingle

Which is why it wouldn't be at all out of the ordinary for sports commentators to refer to female athletes as the "top female ___," because they usually compete separately. So then why can't we refer to male athletes by the same criteria ("top male scorer") to differentiate them? If they're two different tournaments,

Okay, hate to make a big, fat example out of you, but VALERIE KNOWS THIS. She's not disputing WHAT you say. She's simply saying it isn't good enough. Stop telling her things she already knows! Sorry to assume a bunch of stuff, Val, but all this garbage they keep barfing out as though it's new information for you is

The issue is that understanding. Women's soccer is "Women's Soccer", Men's is just "Soccer". During a women's game "women's" is added to every stat mentioned. As the writer said, either prefix equally or don't at all.

Lasst 2 games were vs France, the #4 team in the world.
One game ended 1-0 on a Leroux goal, the other one was a 2-2 draw.
Would you like me to list the goalies, defenders, middies or attackers? And would you like me to add the French team as well...

I think your anger is clouding your logic. All the author is saying is that Landon Donovan is not actually the "all-time U.S. leading goal scorer" because there are U.S. women who have scored more goals than he has. It is more accurate to say that he is the all-time U.S. leading men's goal scorer. Why should it be so

Ever consider that maybe men dominate those particular sports BECAUSE of the kind of culture that refers to men's leagues as THE league. You said it yourself that the US has invested much more in women's soccer than others and that that has resulted in a drastically better crop of players. Imagine if our culture truly

Oh my goodness, we regret ever doubting your superior intellect and reasoning powers!

You're missing the point. The author isn't debating whether men's sports are more competitive etc. Just that as we generally use a qualifier when discussing women's sports, it's only fair to add the "male" identifier for men's sports as well. When you don't do this you again make the male the default. How are little

You are reading wrong. Valerie is not arguing that the athletes are equal in strength, stamina, etc. She is querying why men's accomplishments are rarely qualified as such but women's accomplishments nearly always are. Donovan is literally not the US all-time leading goal scorer. It is both accurate and acknowledges

Oh, fuck off, angry little trollboy. Your kind of response————significantly, you're not angry at the sexism, but at the response to it————that indicates just how pernicious sexism is.

We have to stop assuming that the male position is objective, unbiased, nonpartisan, with no need to be qualified as male.

Honest question- did you even read this article?

People also said Meb Keflezighi was the first American to win the Boston Marathon since 1983 (even though a woman won it in 1985), and people said Andy Murry was the first British Wimbledon champ in the open era (even though Virginia Wade won in 1977).

The same argument could be made with Tammy. McCarthy is 43 yrs old but is her character? In this case, couldn't we have the happy situation of a 43 yr old woman cast to play a younger woman, rather than a fifty and sixty something cast to play older?
