It sounds like the DA is much more to blame than the judge. He made the plea deal, while the judge just accepted it.

OTOH, you kind of have to appreciate that his entire justification for his anti-2A claim is “Come on.” That’s some next-level reasoning.

Misusing “who” isn’t really an issue, both because misuse is ubiquitous and because the objective case often sounds wrong even when it’s technically correct. But misusing “whom” is just embarrassing.

The issue is that responding to cases that involve men attacking women by asking what the victim could have done to avoid it is the default. It’s always presented as “life lessons for other women,” but it boils down to the same thing — the suggestion that the attack didn’t have to happen and that it wouldn’t have

Women aren’t generally believed in the first place. More often than not, reporting rape results in zero consequences (not even an arrest) for the perpetrator while being psychologically damaging enough to the victim that some have described the process as worse than the rape itself.

This should really have more stars.

I love black forest cake, but apparently what you get in the U.S., which generally uses cherry pie filling, is very different from the authentic cake, which involves large amounts of cherry liqueur and is not very sweet. I’d really like that, but I have no idea where I could find one, and the recipes I’ve found are

Does something still count as “alleged” if the perpetrator not only admitted it, but actively bragged about it?

What I’m struck by is that he seems to think no one on “pro-choice left” has children in the first place. If that were true, Republicans wouldn’t have to spend anywhere near much time any money on voter suppression.

Maya Rudolph was amazing in Away We Go. I haven’t watched SNL in years when I saw it, so I wasn’t really familiar with her, but she blew me away.

Still one of the most beautiful moments in the history of punditry.

It was really bizarre to me how many people were furious at Nate Silver after the election, claiming they’d “trusted” him and he’d let them down. I refreshed 538 compulsively in the weeks before the election, and I was terrified.

Since this is already out of the greys:

I don’t think I’ve heard Penny yet, but I haven’t been to the dog park in awhile since one of my dogs developed health issues. I like the name, though!

Also don’t name your dog Sophie, because I am tired of every female dog ever having the same name as my dog. It gets very confusing!

Before I gave up meat I used to always keep a package of pre-cooked chicken apple sausages in the fridge so I could grab one in lieu of a meal when I got busy (or lazy). I miss that!

I’m always shocked at how many people swear up and down that Courtney Love murdered him. I recently found out that my co-worker, who is generally sane and not at all conspiracy theory person, is very firmly convinced.

Some of it depends on how you define “cruelty-free.” Many brands that claim they don’t test on animals mean they don’t test on animals in the U.S., but they do test on animals in other countries like China, where animal testing is required by law. Both Revlon and MAC fall into that category. Burt’s Bees, sadly, is now
