I love eating meat and drinking milk and eating cheese and butter, but I recognize that factory farming is wrong for many, many reasons. I’ll never be a vegetarian, much less a vegan, but I will ALWAYS support local family farms - too many of them were bought out by big farms when the recession of the 1980s hit, and…
Almonds are incredibly water-intensive, too.
I brought this up to may dad who thinks it is ridiculous. His reply, “Well if they can afford the water then they should be able to use it.” Wow, our society really has done a number on us when we say it’s ok to use up our natural resources because they can afford it. My dad has been so brainwashed that he doesn’t…
California agriculture needs some reforms, absolutely. Especially when you learn that we’re still working off of water claiming rights laws from the 19th century. Keep in mind though that agricultural use contributes heavily to the state economy, so it will always have the advantage in the political battles, and in…
I’m sorry. I’ve never heard it used in reference to race, only to very ugly behavior, and almost always that ugly behavior has been in reference to entitled, rich, usually white people or reality show contestants.
How about instead of asking people to stop eating meat and dairy, ask the producers to use some water-saving farming techniques. If all farms are able to reduce water consumption by 5%, that would have the same impact as all homes reducing by 20% (assuming the 80% agricultural usage, I’ve seen it at 90% in other…
I don’t think you’re hearing as much about beef consumption is because there are more than a few peoples’ livelihoods that depend on it. No one needs a fucking jungle yard.
I totally don’t get the whole ‘perfect, thick, green lawn thing”. I mean, yes, theoretically I know WHY it’s a thing and where it came from, but this isn’t post WWII suburbs anymore, knock it off people. My yard is very big, but pretty much the only green I have, and only during rainy season is weeds, because the rest…
The sprinkler is spraying the wrong way so some or all of the water is landing on the sidewalk instead of the lawn.
Good. I hope they do. And also shut off the water supplies of people who think having a green lawn is so important that they can wreak havoc on unique ecosystems, food-growing farms, and salmon-bearing waterways.
I find it hard to believe that people “had no idea” of how much water they were using. Do they not pay their bills? They have to be paying a mint!
I think that she was refusing to take the test, because it was bullshit and it costs a butt-ton of money, particularly after not being paid for a month? Crap, I gotta go re-read.
The refusing to pay part is where we get to the “FUCK IT I QUIT” part. I had read this story before and didn’t re-read here, so I forgot about that one!
It’s insane that being nationally board certified isn’t enough, that’s a very difficult certification to get! The standards of national board certification are far higher than the state certification.
Question about this: If they moved her then realized they’d messed up, could she get emergency credentials?
The rub is that she is “nationally certified to teach students between the ages of seven and 12.” National Board Certification is a hard process. What’s messed up is that despite the extreme rigorousness of the national certification process, she doesn’t meet state requirements - Alabama state requirements - not…
Corgill has taught for over 20 years and is nationally certified. The school hired her for second grade and then moved her to the fifth (not at her request). According to Corgill, they told her she would have to pay for certification.
well if they aren’t paying her on time, sounds like she would have had to take on debt to get that certification.
She’s nationally certified (details here: http://www.nbpts.org/national-board…) which is different than the license issued by her state. National certification is pretty hardcore, there’s no reason her district couldn’t have issued a provisional license based on her national certification, unless state rules…
