I feel like it was very much a film of its time, and hasn’t aged well, aside from the cinematography. I also consider it a stylistic prototype to Six Feet Under, a superior work in every way.

I assume she was the lowest bidder for the job and the court official responsible for securing the contract was too lazy to vet her at all because she looked and sounded “respectable.” It happens, especially in small towns like this.
