It really was. Also, just an incredible performance by Jeremy Strong in this episode, and in that scene in particular.

I dunno, I feel like it would have been pretty easy for Naomi to just go the 80's nostalgia route, which Ken is very clearly into from his obsession with He-Man lunchboxes, and whatever was on that blanket he was wrapped in at the end of the episode. Go on E-bay and find some extremely limited edition Transformers…
As Kendall was breaking down after looking for his kids’ present, he said: “I wish I was.....[long pause]...I wish I was home.”
Definitely seems more like a Tucker. He has that smarmy, faux-intellectual vibe and extremely punch-able face.
Yeah, that was strange. The conversation between Greg and Tom ended without a definitive decision, but then Shiv seemed to confirm to Logan that Greg had indeed signed the JDA.
I think it’s been abundantly clear since Ewan first came around in season 1 that he is a massive hypocrite. He thinks ATN is evil, yet he has a seat on the board of its parent company and lives on the spoils of it. He lies to himself that he is better than Logan and the rest of the family but he is compromised like…
Hard to disagree with that. I think David Simon, Clark Johnson, et al. were a little too invested in the “romance” of old school journalism (I think they both worked at the Sun at some point). The portrayal of the old timer reporters veers a little towards the maudlin as opposed to the more balanced portrayal you get…
I agree that the newspaper storyline is not executed as well as the other big institutional storylines (police, organized labor, politicians, schools), but it was still of a piece with those other storylines, and in my opinion actually proved to be the most prescient.
On the one hand, yeah, a bad final season/bad finale should not totally diminish the legacy of what was once a great show. I certainly don’t regret watching all of GOT just because I hated the ending. But, I can honestly say that it’s the only show I’ve watched where the ending completely ruined any desire I have to…
Same. I loved the movies and my brother bought me a really nice complete set of the books for Christmas. I was really excited to plow through them. Then Tom Bombadil happened. Put it down and never picked it up.
I made it about 3 pages into Gravity’s Rainbow before I gave up, then talked to a friend who suggested I start with The Crying of Lot 49 since it was a bit of an easier read. So I gave that a whirl, and sure enough he was right...I made it about 6 pages in before giving up!
I binged the entire series over the weekend and really enjoyed it. It’s best to not know too much going in, but I have to say one thing: The ‘Tug of War’ game towards the middle of the season is hands down one of the best sport/competition scenes I have seen in any show or movie. That was an absolute adrenaline rush.
I don’t know how to feel about this. “The Sopranos” explored the characters’ backstory just enough, while leaving certain details ambiguous. I don’t necessarily want or need to have all those details filled in. Also, from the trailer alone this looks much more like a straight-ahead conventional mob story than the show…
How would you respond to this reviewer’s critique of the film’s political point of view, i.e.: “This sort of cynicism is arguably conservative, even pernicious.”
I think the review actually did a pretty job of explaining why the reviewer felt that the violence in the film didn’t add anything to the story other than pure shock value and/or to aggressively underline what seems to be the very banal themes of the film. Any freshman history major can tell you that political…
The ads on this website have gotten out of control. 2 separate pop ups, followed by a half-page Apple ad that won’t go away. Whatever shitty company owns AVC these days can suck it. Sorry to the writers who work hard on here and who I still love. Not your fault. But this is a HORRIBLE user experience.
On Avery Island is great, and while we’re on the subject of criminally underappreciated NMH music, the Ferris Wheel on Fire EP is also fantastic, contains some of the same songs as Avery and a few more that I don’t think have ever made it to any streaming service. Youtube has the full EP.
NOBODY LIKES MILHOUSE!
I just watched this last week and absolutely LOVED it. So so so funny, and also a really hopeful and uplifting underdog story. It would be hard not to smile watching this movie.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate Wanda Sykes? That joke you cited in the review is absolutely perfect.
