As I said elsewhere, I think BotW would have been better for having "ruined" temples that are unrelated to the story. These places could have enemies not normally found in BotW and could feature more traditional Zelda temple design and unique puzzles based on how the temples would be falling apart. 

Shrine concept is great. Execution is lacking.
