I read the article before I watched the video so I knew the kid was alive, and I literally yelled at my computer when she left him hanging like that. I wanted to reach through my screen and smack her.

Yeah, I grew up with dogs. I was pretty involved with dog sports (Schutzhund mostly) so it wasn't too much of a transition to working dogs. I'd also done search and rescue as a ground pounder for a few years before I got involved with the dog side of things.

Sure. I learned by joining a K9 search and rescue team. You sort of learn on the job from more experienced members, plus seminars and working with police dog trainers and things like that. There aren't any formal schools or anything, at least that I'm aware of. I worked with the team for a year as support before

Not always from puppyhood, but usually. I'll consider dogs up to two years old. They can basically learn it at any age, but the training process takes about two years on average (the absolute fastest I've seen it 18 months; that's for one technique, if they're cross-trained it typically takes longer).

For what it's worth, cadaver dogs wouldn't alert on a live person. Mine are even cross-trained to find both live subjects and human remains and they wouldn't alert on a live person when they're doing cadaver work.

You'd be surprised. I've seen a decent number of missing people reunited with their families through my work. Sometimes people jump into action, sometimes they just freeze even when they're sure of the situation. And this guy probably wasn't sure what to believe. I think he thought his son was dead at first since

To be honest I don't care about this film—I'm not offended by it and will probably go see it. I just thought comparing North Korea's reaction to Germany's reaction to a film about Hitler was silly.

Please tell me I'm missing a joke here and you're not comparing a universally-reviled (even by the current government of the country he formerly led) dictator with a current head of state.

I really hope he was joking about handing it out manually. I think if some dude handed me a written proposal about dating I would die of embarrassment *for* him.

But that means you missed his valuable TIP OF THE DAY about meeting for the first time in a public place! Now you're going to wind up agreeing to show up at a serial killer's house for a first date.

Yeah, I definitely think "almost zero homophobia" is too generous, but I do think that younger people are significantly less homophobic. I see it even in kids in my fairly conservative small town. The teenagers will still use "gay" as an insult and are very careful to not be seen as gay, so there's definitely still

It's also surprisingly hard to get fired from Walmart, if my experience working there was any indication. One of my coworkers literally got caught shoplifting and the manager was like, "This was an accident, right?" and when she agreed, didn't do anything. One of my managers told me the firing process is long and

I am sorry for adding to that confusion. I do understand where you're coming from now and I agree.

Yeah, I think that's why so many burned bodies end up in the trash honestly. They try to burn it to dispose of the evidence, and when that doesn't work they go with the next idea.

You are correct, they were men. Actually every case I've been involved with has had a male murderer, but it is a small sample size.

I apologize, I think I misunderstood you then. I agree that his response was not good. I thought you were saying that it should be assumed to be a hate crime. Sorry about that.

I agree that it won't influence their investigation much if at all, and yeah, they don't really have any say in whether it is prosecuted as a hate crime. Honestly I think people overestimate the amount of discretion the police have. In my state, all unattended deaths are treated as crime scenes and the police

It doesn't meet the legal definition for hate crimes, at least in my state (and from what I understand, we've actually got pretty serious hate crime laws compared to other states). They are misogyny-based, but the women weren't targeted because they were women so much as because the victim was a specific woman he felt

I hope this doesn't come across as minimizing what happened or as denying that transgender people are very frequently the target of hate crimes, because that is not what I mean to do. But I can also kind of see where the officer is coming from. I have cadaver dogs and even though I'm a civilian handler, we're called
