The awfulness comes when you try to attach anything to them. Low weight range, small reach of bars that’s not really adjustable and not compatible with a lot of bike racks, watercraft etc. That and they are curved... Just give me two big straight bars like on my Volvo. It’s not like the Outback can look more awkward.
