If people truly didn't give a shit about violence and its consequences they'd be going out and doing it themselves.

They are, but they also don't always accurately weigh the consequences of their actions, or just aren't aware of them. It's not necessarily the entertainment business' job to do that.

It's still not something learnt from movies. And yes, the media should talk about what's happening outside our backyard more, especially in the news. And give a balanced coverage. But movies and entertainment aren't the same as the news or documentaries or investigative journalistic pieces.

But kids differ from adults, for obvious reasons. That's why we raise and (hopefully) educate them.

I think you're overplaying the "things we learn from movies" effect. People know there are consequences. That's why no one jumps off buildings and expects to fly after watching Superman!

But the universally horrified reaction shows that this cartoony violence doesn't desensitize us to real violence.
