To be fair, back in the day, sci-fi fen loved their acronyms a lot more - SMOFs, BNF, FIAWOL, GAFIAting. The SMOFs were folks who organized cons, put out fanzines, rallied the troops, got people together. It was a good thing to be called a SMOF (and since Corriea and his ilk are using it as a pejorative, it still is.)
To be fair, that second one is pretty bog standard for a book in the Baen catalog, and has been for some time...
