You're just repeating yourself now. I teach undergrads and a couple grad courses. I can see the gender differences in the class make-up of my upper division biology versus an upper division or grad math or stats class. Given the amount of research out there on stereotype threat and sexism, I have a heard time…
Really? Because a lot of the comments from experience on this piece disagree with you, and there's a lot of previous empiricial research on stereotype threat in math, computer science and engineering.
Here's a 2005 paper documenting girls from 3rd grade on rate their math ability lower than boys, despite a lack of gendered differences in performance. Sadly it's behind a paywall and the author doesn't have it on their website for free: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
The effect exists because it's an issue. I agree that it's getting better, but I think you're overly optimistic. Most kids don't get a high quality education and even fewer get supportive teachers who understand gender dynamics. Also, from personal anecdotal evidence and from what I hear from people who research…
it might not reflect at the individual grade school person, but it might affect the career trajectory of women in math. i don't know many people who would sign up for a career in a field where they feel they have to bear the brunt of their entire gender. younger people enjoy the one to one competition. the older a…
Super hot, kind of stupid, but seemed to have a good heart. We'd been regularly doing it for about a month when, one morning after a night of drugs and sex having, we were watching the sun rise from his roof. "Pray with me," he said.
Greasy men. Or any man who looks like he hasn't taken a shower or washed his hair. Being unkempt or dirty is fine, but when it gets GREASY, I'm done. You have to look like you don't smell bad. If you look like you smell terrible, I'm not that into you. It's a weird distinction. Jaime Lannister covered in dirt and blood…
A Maxim in the bathroom.
Cuz the teeth in my mouth aren't sharp enough.
I'm starting to think if we just assume Hernandez is responsible for all the murders we are probably going to be right more often than not.
The mobile site could use a bit more polishing. There are long load times, irritating refreshes, and for some reason, kinja makes words like "hello" autocorrect to "extremely angry dinosaur." It's the craziest thing, man.
There was a study of doctors and which ones were sued and which ones weren't.
Those who spoke to the clients a lot, empathized with them, and I'm sure apologized if necessary, were less likely to be sued than those who were closed mouthed and purely clinical. Their medical abilities were secondary.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. You must have felt awful. As a fence, I can definitely say that I have let you down and I offer you a free post to lean on whenever you need it.
I agree. I don't want to see the Girl Scouts decline, but moving away from outdoor activities was a bad move. I don't see why they thought this would attract new people, though I guess it would save money.
Agreed. And I think the assessment that it's more stigmatized for men to seek mental or emotional help is spot-on.
We expect male suicide to be the result of clear-cut outside forces. Existential angst isn't something we venerate in men. But we find it perversely intriguing in iconic women.
It's all rooted in the same…
I would also say that the way men are viewed as "weak" through suicide seems to be true (it's also true there is more of a stigma around men seeking mental help, which is why they often don't get it). I do believe that this is a direct effect of the patriarchy, which requires men to be brave and "manly".
Hello, I'm Leonard Nimoy. The following tale of alien encounters is true. And by true, I mean false. It's all lies. But they're entertaining lies, and in the end, isn't that the real truth? The answer...is no.
