Addendum: I failed to realize how far in I could zoom in that picture, and thus missed the obvious fact that the game is called “Cowboy Tom,” which I was later able to confirm as one of Compile’s “Disc Station” releases. There’s very little information online about this game, so I’m kind of intrigued — may have to

I’m an MSX collector myself, so this was SUPREMELY interesting to me. I watched the NHK World documentary, but this went into considerably more depth than that did, and was tremendously well-written. Really engaging article!

I like how in the one shot, they replicated everything in exquisite detail, including the beer garden billboard in the background... but they removed a Japanese flag, and added a bike lane.

I agree with Kodokljo that the winner is the Japanese version, but for a different reason. Five words:

You don’t have a lot of love for period gaming, do you? ;)

“With a couple of exceptions (Super Mario Bros. 3), the NES Classic’s library consisted of games you’d load up, play for a few minutes, and marvel at how poorly they’ve aged.”

Oh, was he? I had no idea he’d been around that long!

Gogo is totally Daryl. The game gives a LOT of hints that that’s the case. It’s the most plausible theory of them all, so I’m guessing Kitase just wasn’t aware of that intention on the part of FF6's writers.

You’ve been trying for 7 years to find a substitute Metroid game, and didn’t try Axiom Verge? I mean, Axiom Verge basically IS a Metroid game, but rebranded so Mr. Happ doesn’t get sued. ;) It’s about as close to Metroid as you can get without actually BEING Metroid.

Oh, I don’t disagree with you. Like I said, as a character, I love Yunica! She’s awesome! And she’s fun to play as, too — more so than Hugo.

So you only played as Yunica? Man... I love Yunica as a character and all, but her story is actually the weakest of the three IMHO. Hugo’s has a lot more backstabbing going on, and the third character’s (whose route is canonical) is just amazing — and is the only route containing the ACTUAL final boss fight of the

“I’ve played through four Ys games over the past 13 years, and I’ve enjoyed each one, but not for the story. I’ve been drawn in by the responsive combat and lulled by the lush music. If you asked me to match the plot of those games to their titles, I would be at a loss.”

Hmm. I’m not seeing any of the classic room-based isometric platformers on this list — Batman, Head Over Heels, Knight Lore, Alien 8, Solstice, Monster Max, etc., or even the recent HD throwback to the genre, Lumo (though I feel Lumo gets overly frustrating toward its endgame, personally).

I genuinely disagree. The backgrounds look positively gorgeous and beautifully stylized, and the character models look charmingly retro.

That is a fair point, and I do suspect the subjunctive mood may be on its last legs as a result of this.

It is always difficult to choose, but as I was born and raised in the United States, and learned American grammar in school, I tend to side with the American ruleset in almost all instances. I would never correct someone for using standard British grammar or spelling, however (save for at work, anyway, since I’m an

The subjunctive mood essentially uses the plural verb in all cases, whenever a contrary-to-fact situation is involved. It’s the difference between “If I was a rich man” (incorrect) and “If I were a rich man” (correct). So in this case, the proper header would definitively be “If Game of Thrones Were a Cartoon” — it

That, too, is correct English, even if it isn’t a word people say all that often these days (it’s not “won’t,” but “wont,” pronounced identically to the word “want” — see the definition here for details: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/wont?s=t ).

I’ve always been partial to Tirasweel from Legend of Heroes III: The White Witch.
