MS is just doing it wrong. If they did it like Apple, instead of releasing WP 7.8, they'd release WP 8 and make it compatible w/ older phones but certain features will only be available on newer devices. Apple is doing the same thing but they're not calling it iOS 5.8 for older devices

Since we're counting, there were about a dozen MS posts yesterday when Surface was announced vs over 40 Apple posts on the day the new MBP was announced

I'd hardly call those resolutions obsolete. Many 15" laptops still have 1366x768 resolution. 1600x900 isn't great but still pretty good and better than most

Apple could do it if they wanted to. One of Asus' new Zenbooks has some memory soldered on and one upgradeable slot. It's a 13", similar in size to the MBA

That doesn't look any better than the 1366x768 display that I watched it on.

You said it yourself, the display will trickle down to the lower end models. Apple can't put it into the MBA initially cuz it will eat into MBP sales. But when the MBA gets "retina" display, the MBP will have some other flashy new feature and you'll be right back where you started

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Your MBP doesn't have to drive a 2800x1800 primary display
