Back then, most publications referred to what we now call "first-person shooters," as either corridor shooters or Doom-clones. That statement was made to reference that since the game was made in 1995, it would have been humorous to refer to it as such.
That game was Descent, which took the vehicle and controls of a space shooter/flight sim and dropped them into the level design of a first-person shooter.
