Because to play Melee competitively you need outdated hardware, from the console itself to the controllers, the TV, cables, etc. And you have the same small community winning everything with almost no new contenders.

That doesn’t take away that people need to let go, you don’t see people clinging to older SF in Evo, or whatever other franchise, just Smash and it is stupid, it limits the players and in time it bores the hell out of everyone.
