I personally believe it's not so much the code, but more an issue with the network infrastructure and the added cost to set it up and maintain it.

As others said, their work on Mario Kart, and recently Pokemon, shows they can do online fine. Super Smash Bros. Brawl had internet issues when they were dealing with learning pains years ago. If you're talking about 2013, yes their online is decent.
