This tshirt was too much. Wasn’t it enough that she fucked and stole this woman’s husband?!

The Office, Trainspotting, much of Parks and Rec, much of Seinfeld, It’s Always Sunny, Louie. Pathetic people acting outrageously is a pretty common trope.

Or maybe instead of pathetically unfunny, it’s an amplified reflection of the pressures so many women face to nab a dude and meet a series of superficial heteronormative milestones before even reaching 30? And as Bobby mentions, she’s not rewarded for that behavior. I definitely feel like the film works to subvert

why is it that everyone in the 90s looked so much older? im 29 now and still feel like JR looks 35 in that movie

I would also recommend the podcast “How did this get made?” where they take usually, bad movies and discuss all the ways they are bad. They usually always have a guest actor/comedian on to discuss a movie.

“Julia, just you know, play yourself.”

They’d barely spoken in years. She didn’t even know he was getting married.

Ooo! Recently on the hunt for new podcasts as my current rotation is getting stale. Thank you.

When I say she didn’t love him, I don’t mean she wasn’t in love with him. I mean she didn’t love him at all or give one wit about him.

One of my step sisters used to watch this movie LITERALLY every day for months after it came out on VHS which has given this movie’s already twisted premise an even more sinister and maddening undertone for me. I remember always being a little afraid of it because JR seemed so... MEAN, and yet she was ostensibly the

The “We Hate Movies” podcast has an episode about this where they posit that Dermot Mulroney’s character is a serial killer, among other things. It’s hilarious and I recommend it highly.

Exactly. It’s a heightened, comedic version of that crisis a lot of people feel when they realize their life *isn’t* going to work out like a romantic comedy.

I was not a fan of the movie at the time (I’m one of those people who irrationally don’t like Julia Roberts - don’t judge me, we all have an actor or actress that we feel this way about), but your article actually made me want to give it a second chance. All I really remember is the scene with the singing and lobsters

Pssh. Read any romance novel. Apparently everyone in fictionland has multiple post-grad degrees, great careers, and no debt by twenty-five.

Did anyone else die a little bit inside realizing Julia Roberts’ character is only 27? Successful at 27! 27! Something else to cry about when watching this movie now....

I don’t think the movie ever intended anyone to believe she really loved the guy.

Now playing

Retroactive recognition of Bree Turner AKA Rosalie from Grimm in the “Wishing and Hoping” opening dance sequence!

Julia Roberts can be so good when she just embraces the shallow, petty, vindictiveness that comes naturally to her.

This doesn’t make sense to me. How was it road rage? He decided to throw beer bottles at them, and then beat Ms. Hassanen to death? Where did road rage come in: it wasn’t as though they were in another car.

Wait - so they are arresting people who were illegally trafficked here? As in, people who are the victims of trafficking are being arrested for being here illegally when the real criminals are the people who trafficked them???
