There are exceptions, like this car I got in '04 (the Canada-only MY04-05 Echo Hatchback, know as the Vitz/Yaris elsewhere). This car did not even make it to the US, which sounds strange when reading this article as our safety standards are basically identical. I mean, Toyota made a special version of it for Canada.
