I can’t be certain, but I could guess that maybe the years in which you do choose to get a flu shot it’s because you’ve seen people around you get sick? Or you’ve heard it’s a particularly bad flu season and that encourages you to get it? You could be exposed prior to getting the shot.

I know lots of people who throw the world “flu” around to mean any time they’re not feeling well in the winter. I guess having a “cold” feels too pithy or something? But they never actually have influenza. And of course think the “real” flu is just like a bad cold.
