I used to feel this way, really I did, despite growing up in Minnesota (in fact, it might have been worse having visited other much warmer places throughout that time). Maybe I’m growing numb to it, maybe I’m adjusting, maybe I’m just getting older, but I actually find myself leaving a jacket in the car when I go in

The biggest bummer is that the direct correlation between focal length and exposure length means you can have a crazy zoom but not be able to let enough light in to actually show anything in the sky up close.

I know it might be hard for some to do but I have tried to maintain $1,000 in my checking as a “buffer” but it’s not to avoid overdraft fees alone.

Lots of depressing responses but I have to throw my hat in the “what free time?” bucket, too.

Similar to the Polarie I got the cheaper iOptron, used on eBay to save some additional cash. It works pretty slick and I am using my 150-600mm Tamron for most of it, though I found several objects were too wide for more than 400mm. I actually didn’t take very long exposures at the longer zooms, maybe 15 seconds,

Now playing

Odd execution but I for one welcome the return of anything pop-up headlight related.

Absolutely. I had a Hero3+ too, but it’s at the bottom of the lake, so in a way it turned out to be a blessing. Can’t wait for spring. Really enjoyed dabbling in deep space photos with an equatorial mount late this year, hoping to step it up even further next year. My first DSLR camera (Canon T6s) will be put to

We actually weekend about the 47° parallel, so I think we should be doing better but we also face south with the woods to our back so I’ve probably been blissfully unaware many times and now that I’m looking for them I can never find them.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY ADDICTING. I went from some star trail stacking (further up the replies) to this in one summer. I can’t get enough. Jealous of your northern lights though, I haven’t been lucky enough to catch ‘em....yet....

Of course you have been (one of my favs too), I was just talking you up further down in the thread!

It’s worth noting that even a GoPro4 can take decent star photos (GoPro introduced night modes or basically up to 30 second exposures in the 4). Combined with the same stacking methods I made the photo below just leaving the GoPro in timelapse out overnight. It was basically my jumping off point for getting into

When it gets below 0°F it’s F-ing cold. Argument solved.

One time a retailer, a specialized auto parts place, raked me over the coals for something I found out was actually available generically for about 15% of their retail price. (literally the same part) I contacted them and they demanded some outlandish restocking fee plus of course my cost of shipping.

I’ve heard that before but I haven’t had enough to prove it true or false, but when I replaced the stern light on my fishing boat with LED it didn’t make me any less of a target for them!

Wait, is it a bad sign that #9 is distracting me from work? (as opposed to falling asleep)

But how is it for encounters?

It seems like there’s a pretty wide swath between Law Firm and Startup.

We had a Plymouth Voyager, near identical to the woody pictured (same minus the roof rack). We called it the ‘Peanut Butter Cup’. It lasted almost a decade when we moved on to a 94 Grand Voyager that had a monster conversion roof just to fit a small 10" tv inside.
