One of the interesting things that I think gets lost in these conversations about photo retouching reinforcing negative body images for women is that photo retouchers are just dudes/gals with jobs. And they need to justify their function to keep those jobs.

I think you may have already gotten your wish? I don't think I've ever heard of any real scientist or engineer working on a time machine.
I haven't watched the show, but this weird meta-setting thing has me kind of intrigued now. Not that these guys would be the first to do it - the creators of Mass Effect have explicitly said their setting is influenced by 80s sci-fi, for example.
