I assumed you were referring to vertical loads because I thought they looked pretty decent laterally. It's basically a flat plate of sizable thickness, shouldn't it should handle tension and compression very well?
Looks like the lowers are beefy, and are what supports the weight. The uppers shouldn't carry any vertical load.
