Rubbing alcohol does work, but has the unhappy consequence of damaging the PCB over time. It isn't bad, you could get years of service out of cartridges cleaned regularly with rubbing alcohol.
I'm going to disagree on the brass polish. That stuff is corrosive and will degrade the contacts over time. Pick up a can of spray contact cleaner (or electric motor cleaner) from your auto parts store (you'll find it nearby the brake cleaner) and just spray the contacts (no need to disassemble the cartridge).
