Of course there are toxic shitters online - Melee is not unique in that way. But if you think that’s representative even a small portion of the community you are (fortunately) mistaken. Honestly, watch any Melee content created in the last 30 days and you will see the amount of love and passion that people have for

FYI 99% of Melee players just want to play the game and be left alone. It’s our favorite game of all time and we want to keep playing it because it’s fun. Nintendo has tried multiple times to stop people from playing or watching the game, even after the community raised ~95k for breast cancer research (which allowed

I disagree

One day, I hope to live in a world where people will be happy for me that I still play Melee, and they won’t react in disgust and call me a member of a cult.

Sure. I’ll tell the 60k + people that watch every major that it’s an old game and they shouldn’t like it anymore.

I get that Ultimate probably gets in more page views, but the I feel like Melee has some really interesting stories to tell. The fact that a game that’s almost 20 years old still has an evolving meta, and someone with such a great story as Axe makes for a great article IMO, regardless of the game.

My comment was in response to Vunder’s - about a Melee tournament that happened over the weekend. The game has been out since 2001, so that’s what I was referring to about the meta being solved. It’s a really great story that I wish would have gotten its own article.

Wish this got it’s own story. The fact that someone was able to win a massive tournament with a “mid-tier” that’s never won before proves the game hasn’t been solved after all these years.

Cooler is obviously subjective, and I will totally admit that fully understanding what’s going on in Melee is not as easy as in Ultimate. But all of the technical things that make Melee so complicated allow for much more creativity and new interactions pretty much every time you watch. I just think too many people

Obligatory post to tell people to look into the Melee scene. Extremely fun “esport” to both play and watch, but pretty much completely grassroots.

This meme is great only because people that use it ironically clearly don’t watch competitive Smash. Final Destination is the most boring stage, and everyone loves watching good low-tier players more than bread and butter high-tier players. I hope you enjoy watching the Nintendo tourney, but please don’t bash other

Most people who play Smash competitively actually like the fact that Nintendo is hands off. Yes, it means less money. But it also means that there’s so much more flexibility with how the scene grows and evolves. This is especially true given how strict Nintendo typically is with its IP

Honestly, I find it really disingenuous when people reference the “record revenue”. It feels like you’re trying to tell people that the companies are making more money than ever before. While revenue does mean more dollars are coming in, it has no relation to profit - dollars left over after expenses. I think a pretty

This is most certainly not the case over the last 18 months. Outside of Hungrybox (who didn’t win either Summit in 2018, EVO, or Genesis 5) there has been almost no guarantees for top 8. I’ve never seen Melee this open, honestly.

One big caveat - they announced record **revenue** not profit. They brought in the most money they ever have, but they likely spent more than ever before as well. A company can have $20 billion in revenue and not even close to profitable.

No mention of the 155k people watching Melee right before this :(

If you wanted to write about salary comparisons at EA, why not just do that? I get that you care deeply about game devs organizing, but this article reads strangely since it basically is covering two different topics.

lol

I honestly don’t get why this makes people upset. No one has to do submit any art if they don’t want to... If they were trying to hide the fact that people might get paid, then yeah, fuck that. But if they’re up front about it, it’s kinda your choice whether or not you want to take that risk.

One super important thing to note, at least on the Melee side of this, is how little ANYONE knows/cares about this. They’ve done such a poor job at explaining this to top players, it’s shocking.
